Julie London

JulieJulie London (nee Peck; September 26 1926 - October 18, 2000) was an American singer and actress who toured for more than 40 years. London was a torch performer known for her soft, melodic vocals and languid contralto voice she recorded over thirty albums of jazz and pop standards between 1955 and 1969. The song she sang on "Cry me a river" which she introduced on her debut album was included in the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001. Alongside her recording, London was nominated for the Golden Globe Award in 1974 for her portrayal of nurse Dixie McCall in the television series Emergency!. Born in Santa Rosa, California, to vaudevillian parents, London was discovered while working as an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles, and she began her acting career. London's 35-year acting career began in the film industry in 1944. It featured parts as the female lead role in several westerns. In the mid-1950s, she signed a recording contract with Liberty Records, marking the beginning of her professional music career. Her last studio album was released in the year 1969. She continued her success in the role of the female main character in the role of Dixie McCall on the television series Emergency! (1972-1979) during which she was portrayed by her husband Bobby Troup. Jack Webb produced the show.
