She is the daughter of Beverley Sue Simon (nee Simon), beauty therapist and travel agent, as well as Edwin Leon Nail, an employee of the airline. at the age of five, she moved to St. Louis and graduated from Hazelwood Senior High School. Capshaw graduated from the University of Missouri with a education degree. Additionally, she was a part of Alpha Delta Pi. She was a Special Education instructor at Southern Boone High School Ashland, Missouri and Rock Bridge High School Columbia, Missouri.
